Victorian 14kt Gold Diamond + Garnet Lion's Head Locket
An exquisite raised lion's head locket from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! This stunning piece is crafted in 14kt yellow gold and portrays the fierce repousse head of a lion which graces the front surface of a round locket. The raised die struck lion is wonderfully detailed with garnet cabochon eyes, bold, textured fur, and an open mouth in mid-roar. Clenched in between his ferocious pointed fangs is a single sparkling diamond in a 4-prong setting, perfectly completing the bold design. The front surface of the locket has a smoothly polished finish while the back adorns engraved fancy script initials on the back of the piece. The inside reveals two celluloid covered spaces for photographs and at current time, displays the original black and white photo; this could easily be removed and replaced if desired. This fabulous piece would make a lovely addition to any fine Victorian collection.
Measurements: The locket hangs a little more than 1 1/4" long, measures 1" in diameter, and is 3/8" at the thickest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold locket or lion and the diamond and garnets are intact and securely set. The locket closes securely and is in good working order.
