Victorian 14kt Large Hand Carved Jasper Fob
A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The fob would have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note.
A very stately fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This unusual piece is large in size and has a hand-carved design made of jasper stone. The body of the fob has a long, multi-sided handle with a hinged 14kt yellow gold bail riveted through the center. The fob widens at the base, which is formed by a smooth, rectangular seal with clipped corners. The jasper combines deep mustard yellow hues marbled with a rich, bold sienna red color, and the polished surface has a highly reflective quality. A very unique Victorian piece, it would look wonderful worn on a long chain and is perfect for the fob collector!
Measurements: The fob hangs approximately 1 1/2" long (including the bail for hanging), measures 3/8" wide and 3/8" thick at the handle, and is 1" by 5/8" at the base.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold bail, or to the carved agate, which is free of chips or scratches. The bail is secure and in good condition.
