Victorian 14kt Pearl + Onyx Hair Mourning Locket Earrings
A gorgeous pair of mourning locket earrings from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Each lovely round earring is crafted in 14kt yellow gold and adorns a crystal covered window at the center of an ornate border. A locket of hair rests behind the bezel set clear face and is surrounded by a lovely carved gold border. Encircling the closed-back centerpiece is a delicate border of natural pearls, each one exhibiting a creamy white color and a wonderful surface luster. Finishing the design is an outer border of faceted onyx stones, each one resting in a milgrained bezel setting that together forms a lovely scalloped edge. The facets on the rich black onyx reflect the light beautifully, and contrast perfectly next to the elegant pearls. A hinged earring wire and original c-catch clasp rest on the back where one of the earrings is engraved with a set of initials "MBC" written in a lovely script. These stunning Victorian earrings are an outstanding example of the mourning jewelry tradition, and would make a wonderful addition to any antique collection!
Measurements: Each earring hangs approximately 7/8" long (including the wire at the top), and measures slightly less than 3/4" wide and is about 1/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. All of the natural pearls and onyx stones are intact and securely set, as are the crystal windows. The hinged earring wires and c-catch clasp are secure and in good working condition.
