Victorian 18kt Swiss Enamel Teardrop Earrings
Swiss enameled pieces were commonly produced to be sold as souvenirs for Victorian travelers. A very fine type of enameling, this technique used very intricate detail and often portrayed scenic Swiss Alps villages with streams, mountains and wonderful homes and churches. These serene images were produced by first covering a piece of metal in a neutral enameled color. A wonderful detailed picture was then painted on the enameled base and re-fired to set the image. A clear glaze was then applied to the image to preserve it. The pieces were often set in a hollow frame making them very light and comfortable to wear.
Although these earrings do not depict a scenic Swiss image, they feature the fine Swiss enamel craft from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Each is crafted in 18kt yellow gold and comprised of a stunning teardrop link dangling from a complimentary topper. The link is embellished with a beautiful enameled design featuring draped "beads" that rests on a cobalt blue and rich, black background. The vibrant enameling comes alive in seafoam green, soft white, dark red, and cobalt blue, with each color outlined in elegant gold veins. Resting at the tip of the link is an elongated gold bead, adding the perfect feminine touch! The link swings from a half-dome topper, decorated with a fabulous enameled flower motif at the center of a cobalt blue background. The earrings have a hollow fabrication, making them wonderfully lightweight and comfortable to wear, despite their length. Attached to the top is a simple earring wire, allowing the earrings to dangle with lovely movement, framing the face beautifully. Perfect for the serious antique jewelry lover, they would make a magnificent addition to any Swiss enamel collection!
Measurements: Each earring hangs approximately 2 1/2" in total length (including the wire at the top), and measures slightly more than 1/4" wide and thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. There is some very minor wear to some of the enameled surface, however is it not noticeable when worn. The wires are secure and in good working condition.
