Victorian 18k Etruscan Micro Mosaic Bird Hair Locket Pendant
An incredible micro mosaic locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This outstanding Etruscan piece is crafted in vibrant 18kt gold, and comprised of a folding locket pendant featuring an ornate design. Decorating the surface is a highly detailed micro mosaic, which depicts a pair of birds at the center of an elaborate border. The delicate mosaic tiles have been meticulously hand cut and set, forming a tapestry of colors that bring the imagery to life. The birds, one white and the other rosy pink, resemble peace doves embracing each other as they rest on a twig, surrounded by leafy branches. Additional colorful flowers and flourishes form a patchwork design that decorates the border and the wide bail. Fine Etruscan wirework and delicate beadwork add further detail to the back of the pendant, and resting at the center is the word "ROMA" in raised block lettering. A hinge across the top of the wide bail opens the folding locket, revealing a glass-covered space which reveals the original black and white photograph and hair of a young woman. The removable frame allows you to replace the photo and hair with your own personal photograph or keepsake memento if desired. When worn from a favorite chain, the pendant makes a stunning statement piece and would be a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pendant measures approximately 1 3/4" long (including the large bail at the top), and measures about 1" wide, and 1/2" thick. The removable locket window inside has a 3/4" diameter. The overall pennyweight of the piece is 15.1dwt (23.6 grams).
Condition: The overall condition of the locket pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. All of the micro mosaic tiles remain intact and securely in place, and the applied Etruscan wirework and beadwork details are in good condition. The locket hinge moves smoothly, and the removable glass frame is intact.
