Victorian 18kt 3-Sided Carnelian + Banded Agate Intaglio Signet Ring
A signet ring can be represented by a smooth or engraved seal, or with an intaglio, which is created by carving into the surface of a stone. Its purpose would have been pressing into sealing wax.
A magnificent and unusual intaglio signet ring from the early Victorian (ca1850) era! Crafted in 18kt yellow gold, this bold piece adorns a trio of unique intaglio agate stones set across each side of a 3-dimensional front surface. A large oval-shaped banded agate rests at the center, and features a beautifully carved image of a horse drawn chariot. The stone exhibits gorgeous mossy green, and light and dark brown hues with a fabulous milky white strip carrying down the center. Adorning each side is an oval-shaped carnelian, one carved with a winged angel kneeling over a fire, while the other features a carved image of two lovely roosters. The gorgeous stones display a fiery orange color when caught in the light, a perfect contrast against the vibrant yellow gold setting. The trio of stones are bezel set and surrounded by a smoothly polished surface, and finishing the design is a wide band that graduates towards the back. A fabulous and unique statement piece, this outstanding signet ring could be worn by a woman or man and would make an impressive addition to any Victorian collection!
Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 9.5, but could be minimally resized if desired. The flat front surface measures about 1/2" tall and 5/8" wide, and the central intaglio measures slightly less than 1/2" tall and wide. The outer carnelian intaglios measure about 3/8" wide and 1/4" tall. The ring rests about 1/8" above the finger when worn. The graduated band measures 2.5mm wide at the back. The overall pennyweight of the piece is 3.7dwt (5.6 grams).
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting or to any of the intaglio stones, all of which is secure and intact and free of chips or scratches.
