Victorian 18kt Petite Carved Coral Hand "Promise" Charm/Pendant
A fantastic and unique coral charm/pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in 18kt yellow gold, this lovely piece adorns a gorgeous carved coral link that forms the shape of a well-known hand salute. The 3-dimensional palm features the thumb resting atop the folded pinky finger, with the three middle fingers raised upwards. Commonly known as the 3 finger salute, this gesture has been used by Boys and Girls Scouts since 1908 as their "promise" pledge, and has also had various meanings throughout the world. The natural coral displays a magnificent rich orange hue that is free of any dyes or color enhancements. A smoothly polished cap rests at the base, embellished with a subtle ribbed etching, and stamped along the back is an "18K" gold purity mark. Finishing the design is a simple round bail attached at the top, perfect for hanging from a favorite chain or charm bracelet. A wonderful everyday piece with a unique meaning, it would make a fabulous addition to any collection!
Measurements: The charm/pendant hangs slightly more than 3/4" long (including the bail at the top), and measures slightly less than 3/8" wide and is about 1/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the charm is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting, or carved coral. The gold cap and bail are secure and in good working condition.
