Victorian 18kt Onyx + Micro Mosaic Flying Insect Teardrop Pendant
A fantastic micro mosaic insect pendant from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! Crafted in 18kt yellow gold, this teardrop shaped piece is adorned with an exceptional micro mosaic design resting at the center of a carved onyx background. The raised image features tiny tiles of earthy colored glass that have been hand set to form an ornate flying insect motif. The lovely bug displays a variety of colors, including various shades of gray, light and dark browns, rich black, and soft white hues. The insect rests on a bed of milky white mosaic tiles surrounded by a gorgeous smoothly polished and bevel-edged onyx border, allowing the colorful image to come to life. The pendant is held within a vibrant yellow gold bezel featuring an eye-catching beadwork design along the exterior. The open back exposes the onyx stone, and a large round bail rests at the top, perfect for hanging from a favorite chain. A wonderful and unique pendant from the Victorian era, this piece blend perfectly into modern day fashion!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 1 1/2" long (including the bail at the top), measures about 1/2" wide, and is slightly less than 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting. All of the tiles on the mosaic design appear to be intact and secure. The carved onyx is in excellent condition given the age of the piece, and appears to have two minor chips on the front surface, which are not noticeable when worn due to their size and color. The bail is secure and in good working order.
