Victorian French Sterling Pink Tourmaline, Pearl + Enamel Locket/Pendant
A magnificent tourmaline locket pendant from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in sterling silver, this stunning French-made piece adorns gorgeous pink tourmalines on an incredibly ornate wirework design. The oval-shaped locket holds 4 breathtaking foil-backed tourmalines at the center, which rest in a milgrained bezel setting. A delicate natural pearl embellishes the edge of each gemstone, and decorates the center, pairing beautifully with the light and dark rosy pink hues of the stones. Surrounding the centerpiece is a gorgeous border of additional pink tourmalines, each resting in a milgrained bezel setting. A flowing wirework design, covered in black enamel with delicate white dots fans outward from the center stones, and creates a beautiful scalloped border around the entire piece. The wirework creates shapely cutouts throughout, adding a wonderful airiness to the ornate design. The pendant hangs from a romantic bow motif topper, which is lined with additional tourmalines and delicate pearls. A beveled glass-covered locket on the back reveals a bright, gilded interior, and is a perfect place for storing a special photograph or keepsake item. Resting behind the topper is a simple bail, which is stamped twice with a French touchmark of a boars' head, indicating it's silver purity. This beautifully elaborate and unusual locket would make a fantastic statement worn day or night!
Measurements: The locket hangs approximately 1 5/8" long (including the bail), and measures about 1" wide, and 1/2" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket/pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling setting or to the enameling which is free or chips and scratches. All of the tourmalines and pearls are intact and securely set. The locket and bail are secure and in good working order.
