Victorian Huge 14kt & Cherub & Lion Micro Mosaic Pin
An absolutely exquisite micro mosaic pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This wonderful piece is particularly large in size and made of a single oval shaped plaque of onyx which is set in a simple 14kt yellow gold bezel setting. In the center of the onyx oval is a very fine micro mosaic image a winged cherub, possibly Dionysus, the God of Wine, resting atop a walking lion. A garland of grapes is worn around the neck of the lion and the duo are standing on a bed of grass. The cherub boy is holding what appears to be a glass of wine and a crown of greenery rests in his hair. The color and detail of the mosaic is simply marvelous with textured yellow and brown fur on the lion and an intricately detailed face. The cherub has fine grey wings and a wonderful soft expression. On the back of the piece are a pin clasp which connects to extra safety stick pin for added security. The pin clasp is stamped "14K". It's a particularly fantastic mico mosaic and a beautiful example of Italian Victorian artistry!
Measurements: The pin measures a 2 1/2" tall at the tallest point, 2 1/8" at the widest point and 3/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the onyx plaque or to the gold setting and the clasp, safety pin and chain are secure and in good working condition. Amazingly, the mosaic appears to me to be in almost perfect condition which is remarkable for a piece from this era.
