A signet ring can be represented with an intaglio, which is created by carving below the surface of a stone or by a simple smooth seal. Its purpose would have been to seal the wax of a letter or note.

This substantial conversion piece from the Victorian (1880) era is crafted in 14kt yellow gold and holds a large, oval-shaped carnelian stone at its center. Hand-carved into the surface of the carnelian is a detailed image portraying a Roman gladiator holding a spear in one hand and a shield with a star emblem in the other, and donning a feathered helmet. The carnelian stone has a wonderful, rich burnt orange color that is perfectly complemented by the polished yellow gold, open-backed bezel. The bezel features a depressed ridge around the intaglio and continued concentric texture along the sides and a decorative twisted band completes the design. It's a remarkable ring with wonderful artistry and would make a stunning addition to any collection!

Measurements: The carnelian intaglio and gold bezel setting measures approximately 1 3/16" tall, 7/8" wide and the ring rests 1/4" atop your finger when worn. The ring is a size 7 but could be re-sized.

Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or to the carnelian intaglio which is free of significant chips or scratches.
