Victorian 15kt Large Carved Shell Cameo Pin w/ Three Graces
In Greek mythology, a Charis is one of several Charites (Graces), goddesses of charm, beauty, nature, fertility, and human creativity. They ordinarily numbered three, from youngest to oldest, Aglaia (Splendo), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer), hence the term "Three Graces". They were usually considered to be the daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, but also said to be daughters of Dionysus and Aphrodite or Helios and Aegle.
This gorgeous, large shell cameo pin is from the Victorian (ca1880) era and depicts the image of "Three Graces". The cameo is set in a 15kt yellow gold fancy hand etched bezel frame. The Three Graces are all hand carved with exquisite detail. Dresses flowing and hair swaying, you can see the lovely feminine detail in their faces. Fine braided gold roping surrounds the outside of the entire frame and a large gold bow with the same fine etched details rests at the top of the frame. A safety chain connects to a small gold ring from the inside bottom of the brooch for added security. This stunning cameo is very feminine, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The cameo measures approximately 2" long and approximately 1 1/2" wide. The overall size of the brooch measures approximately 2 1/2" long, 2" wide and a little less than 1/2" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the brooch is excellent. There are no apparent marks in the cameo or the gold. The clasp fits snug and secure and in good working condition.
