Victorian Large Sterling Silver Heart Box Locket
A wonderful sterling silver box locket from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This lovely and romantic piece is crafted in sterling silver and depicts a heart shaped box, which hangs from a simple bail, allowing it to be worn as a unique locket pendant. The piece is smoothly polished and features a fabulous set of engraved initials "ESI" at the center. Each letter displays a slightly different engraved pattern, and lovely accent etchings surround the design, all adding a wonderful textural appeal. The locket is hinged and opens to reveal a hollow compartment, which originally may have been used as a pillbox, but could also hold photographs or small keepsake items. The locket hangs beautifully at an angle, thanks to a large round bail that rests at the corner, which is wide enough to accommodate a thick watch chain, if desired. Stamped on the back is a "STERLING" silver purity mark, atop the numbers "1684." An interesting and attractive Victorian piece, it makes a unique pendant and would look fabulous worn everyday!
Measurements: The heart-shaped locket measures about 1 1/2" tall, 1 5/8" wide, and is 1/2" thick. When worn, the pendant hangs approximately 2 1/4" long (including the bail) at a diagonal slant.
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the silver setting and the locket opens easily and closes securely. The bail is secure and in good working condition.
