Victorian Sterling Banded Agate + Garnet Dog Pin
An unusual and gorgeous horseshoe pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in sterling silver, this relatively large pin forms the shape of a substantially sized horseshoe with a charming dog head resting at its open center. The surface of the horseshoe is adorned with beautiful pieces of inlaid banded agate displaying soft grayish blues and creamy whites. A soft etched design embellishes the surface and creates a lovely inner and outer border. The 3-dimensonial dog head displays incredible detail, including rich etched "fur" on its entire head and charming floppy ears, along with a long snout. A rich red garnet cabochon represents the eye, adding a wonderful pop of color to the design. Finishing the design is a bar pin and original c-catch clasp on the back, along with a lovely inscription at the top "TO EDITH from CLARA" written in a beautiful script. This fabulous equestrian pin would look marvelous attached to a favorite garment and would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pin measures approximately 1 1/8" wide, 1 1/4" tall, and is a little less than 1/2" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. All of the stone are secure and intact. The pin and clasp are secure and in good working order. There is a natural darkened patina on parts of the surface, which is common given the age of the piece and adds to its beauty and dimension.
