A fabulous padlock pendant necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Crafted in sterling silver, this beautiful piece consists of a bold interlocking link chain and a functioning padlock pendant with original key at the center. The padlock has a smoothly polished and simple design that features the lock's hallmarks and assay marks with pride. The lock's full catalogue of hallmarks dates the piece back to 1869 and was likely a lock for luggage. There are five hallmarks on the front and two on the back, most very worn with age. The lock has a swivel cover to hide the compartment where the key is to be inserted. The original key is hung to a sterling silver dog clip and bears the maker's name, "HOBBS & CO LEVER". The chain comes together at the back with a simple spring ring closure, but the necklace is likely also long enough to pull on overhead. The necklace blends seamlessly into modern day fashion and makes a stylish statement piece that could be worn everyday!
Measurements: The necklace measures approximately 30" in length. The padlock hangs approximately 1 3/4" long, 1 1/4" wide and 3/8" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the necklace is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. The padlock and clasp are secure and in good working condition.
