Vintage 14kt Carved Lapis Lazuli Buddha + Cultured Pearl Pendant
The ancient Indian figure Siddhartha Gautama, now commonly referred to as simply "Buddha," was a sage who lived around 500 BC. His influential teachings are the philosophies on which Buddhism was founded. The word Buddha means "awakened one" or "enlightened one." A universally recognized symbol, Buddha has been depicted in countless works of art and jewelry throughout the ages. Traditionally shown in a state of deep meditation, Buddha represents a harmonious balance of both wisdom and inner peace.
A wonderful and artistic Vintage Buddha pendant from the 1960s era! This relatively large piece is comprised of a gorgeous carved lapis lazuli stone that forms the shape of Buddha, surrounded by a 14kt yellow gold frame. The gorgeous deep blue stone features intricately hand-carved details representing folds of fabric and delicate facial features. Buddha is depicted in a traditional meditative posture, seated with a robe draped over his shoulders, and a stoic facial expression. The figure is surrounded by an elaborate open center frame that is reminiscent of the Japanese style shofuso architecture. The pointed archway and sides feature beaded accents, and the base adorns two cultured pearls on the front, providing a lovely feminine touch. A simple bail rests at the top of the pendant, perfect for hanging from a favorite chain, and a "14K" gold purity mark is stamped on bottom of the base. A beautifully made piece, it would make a special addition to any collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 1 1/2" tall (including the bail at the top), and measures 1 3/8" wide, and is 1/2" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the yellow gold setting, carved carved lapis lazuli, or cultured pearls, all of which are intact and securely set. The bail is secure and in good working condition.
