Vintage 14kt Red Enamel Hidden Devil in Shaker Charm
A wonderful Vintage devil charm from the 1950s era! This amusing and collectable piece is crafted in 14kt yellow gold, and portrays a miniature 3-dimensional martini "shaker," complete with pouring spout. The shaker has a working hinged lid, which flips open at the side and snaps securely shut. Once opened, the charm reveals a small devil hidden inside that has been enameled with a bright red face. The horned devil is double-sided, with black dotted "eyes" on one side, and rests atop a hidden coiled spring, allowing it to pop into motion when the lid is opened. A simple bail rests on the side of the lid so that the charm can hang on an angle from a favorite chain or charm bracelet, if desired. The unique pairing of a devil with a martini shaker serves as a reminder of "temperance" (abstinence from alcohol, or moderation and self-restraint) or possibly a reference to the Prohibition era (ca1920-1933) in the United States. This period of reform aimed to correct perceived societal flaws and instill a greater sense of social morality by limiting alcohol production, distribution, and consumption. Now a unique Vintage piece, this creative charm would make a fun addition to any collection!
Measurements: When closed, the shaker charm measures approximately 5/8" tall and about 3/8" wide.
Condition: The charm is in overall excellent antique condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to yellow gold setting. There is some wear to the red enameling, however, it is hardly noticeable when worn and does not detract from the overall charm of the piece. The spring function works properly, the hinged lid opens easily and closes securely, and the bail is secure and in good working order.
