GAY FRÉRES Vintage 18kt Diamond Multi-Strand Pearl Horse Head Bracelet
Gay Fréres was founded in 1835 in Geneva by Jean-Pierre Gay and Gaspard Tissot. They specialized in making pocket watch chains and jewelry and have gained a reputation for both the quality of their work and reliability of their service. By the 20th century, the company had become one of the most renowned metalworkers of the period, particularly for their work in stainless steel, which is more difficult to work in than precious metals. They supplied designs and pieces for Rolex, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and many more and by the 1970s, was running the largest factory in Geneva, employing over 500 specialist craftsmen. In 1998, after being a family owned business for over 150 years, the company was bought by Rolex. They continue to be regarded as world specialists in handmade chains, watch bracelets and new jewelry, however, it is the jewelry of the 1960s and 1970s that is particularly collectible as it rarely appears on the market.
This exceptional Vintage piece is a French made bracelet by Gay Fréres and is from the 1960-70s era. Crafted in 18kt yellow gold, the bracelet is comprised of a multi-strand pearl bracelet with a double horse head centerpiece. With six strands on both sides, the lustrous pearls meet at the neck of the realistic gold horse heads. The pearls have fantastic luster and a soft peachy pink color which looks striking next to the rich yellow gold. The horse heads are incredibly detailed and intricate and feature long, flowing manes accented by sparkling white diamonds, upright ears, distinguished faces and black onyx beads representing their eyes. The horses connect by sharing a single hinged horse bit at the center, allowing each to move freely and easily. The bracelet fastens at a gold clasp which is incorporated into the design, displaying a floral-like motif. There is a safety catch for added security and the clasp has several hallmarks including two Mercury stamps, the French made for export mark, and a Gay Fréres hallmark, which is difficult to distinguish, on the underside. It's a stunning and rare piece, and makes a true statement when worn. It would make a fantastic addition to any collection, particularly that of a Gay Fréres collector!
Measurements: The bracelet measures 7.5" long, is approximately 3/8" at the widest point and has a depth of 1/2". The pearls measure approximately 2.75mm.
Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting and all of the pearls, diamonds and onyx stones are intact. The stringing is in excellent condition and the clasp and safety are secure and in good working order.
