Gold-in-quartz was formed while the earth was still in its molten state. During the cooling and solidification process, veins of gold became trapped with the crystals of quartz in the mine. This created a very dramatic contrast between the white quartz and the yellow of the gold. Jewelry made from gold quartz became quite a fashion statement of the 1880s.
A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. A spinner or swivel fob has two or more sides, which can be turned or swiveled within a moveable bracket. This allows the wearer a choice as to which side is displayed prominently!
An absolutely fabulous gold quartz spinner fob necklace from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This stunning 14kt gold piece is comprised of a rose gold watch chain adorned with a yellow gold spinning fob at its center, creating a wonderful two-tone appeal. The rectangular fob is adorned with a smoothly polished gold quartz stone at the center, held within a simple frame, which spins freely and easily. The pendant hangs from an ornate wirework topper and fluted bail that is decorated with bold etched motif, adding lovely texture to the design.
The watch chain is comprised of rectangular-shaped links which are inlaid with two plaques of gold quartz set into each side, and etched connector rings attach the links together. Finishing the design is a matching toggle bar hanging from a large spring ring clasp at the center. The gold quartz is stunning throughout the necklace, displaying a range of colors that include milky white, soft grey, and beige, with marbled flecks of yellow gold. The stones pair perfectly next to the smoothly polished rose gold setting. The necklace fastens with a swivel watch chain that also allows the fob and toggle bar to be removed, or additional charms can be added if desired, creating a wonderfully versatile piece!
