A signet ring has a flat or engraved face used to stamp a seal, while an intaglio has a design carved into a stone below its surface. Pressing an intaglio into wax produces a raised image. Both were used historically to mark identity and authorize documents.

Can an antique signet ring be engraved with my initials?

Often, yes, if the face is blank or lightly worn. Engraving a genuine antique should be done carefully by a skilled hand, and we can advise on whether a particular ring is a good candidate before any work is done.
