Victorian Hand Carved Celluloid Cicada Bug Pin
A very unusual pin from the Victorian (ca1880) era! This artistic piece is crafted in celluloid, and carries the shape of a 3-dimensional cicada bug. The celluloid is wonderfully lightweight and has a translucent appearance in shades of yellow and brown and the surface of its wings have been embellished with black hand painted details giving further dimension to the design. The cicada is perched atop a flat celluloid base, which is carved to represent its legs peaking out from underneath and a bar pin and c-catch clasp are attached to the underside, allowing it to be easily fastened to a favorite garment. A fun and unusual piece, this pin would be perfect for any insect lover or vintage costume jewelry collector!
Measurements: The cicada measures 1 1/4" long, 1/2" wide, and is 3/8" at its thickest point.
Condition: The pin is in very good antique condition. Besides a very small chip at the tip of one of the wings, there is no serious damage to the carved celluloid design. There is some light fading to the hand painted detail on the due to age, but it does not detract from the design. The pin clasp fastens securely and is in good working condition.
