Art Nouveau 14kt “Lightning Ridge” Black Opal & Enamel Ring

Black opals are among the most rare and valuable of all natural opal varieties. This opals ring from the early 1900’s has a 10+ct Black Opal with colors to match the finest to ever come out of Australia. Unlike their common opal counterparts, they have a dark canvas and radiate brilliant flashes of colors due to their subtle iron oxide and carbon properties. Although a portion of the world's opals are mined in Ethiopa, most originate in Australia (particularly from a region known as "Lightening Ridge") and the opal has henceforth been named Australia's national stone. Historically, opals were believed to bring good luck when given as a gift. In the modern day, they continue to be adored worldwide and are one of the most desirable stones used in fine jewelry!

An extraordinary black opal ring from the Art Nouveau (ca1900) era! This exquisite ring is made of 14kt yellow gold and holds a single large black opal at the center of a decorative enamel mounting. The black opal cabochon is simply mesmerizing, displaying an array of iridescent colors that flash in the light. Included in the incredible ensemble of colors are shimmery hues of blue, purple, pink, orange, and gold. The opal is bezel set and surrounded by a bright green enamel border. At each shoulder is a decorative pillar design, which is complete with colorful green and blue enamel details. The band of the ring is smooth and tapers in towards the back. A truly spectacular Art Nouveau piece, the ring makes a beautiful statement when worn. It would make an outstanding addition to any jewelry collection!

Measurements: The ring has a finger size of 5.75 but could easily be re-sized.

Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no serious damage to the gold setting or to the opal stone. There is some normal wear and chips to the enameled details which is hardly noticeable when the ring is worn and could be repaired if desired.
