Reverse carved crystal is a technique created by cutting rock quartz crystal into a convex form and then polishing it into a cabochon shape. An image is carved into the flat side of the crystal and then painted by hand. From the front, the picture appears to be almost three-dimensional. Many different images were used in reverse carved crystal jewelry and artwork, but animals were some of the most common motifs.
A fabulous Essex crystal pendant from the Edwardian (ca1910s) era! This wonderful piece is crafted in 15k vibrant yellow gold, and features a beautifully carved and hand painted depiction of a Dalmatian. The dog is wonderfully detailed, and wonderfully contrasts the mother of pearl background. The portrait is held within a smooth and simple bezel-setting, which features delicate texturizing-engravings. The top of the piece features a complimentary gold bail, which would allow the piece to easily attach to a favorite gold chain. A one-of-a-kind pendant, this piece would make a lovely gift for any dog lover!
Measurements: The pendant measures approximately 1 1/8" in diameter and has a weight of 6dwt.
Condition: The pendant is in overall excellent condition. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The Essex crystal is free of chips and scratches and is in overall excellent condition. The complimentary bail is securely attached and I working order.
