"Plique à Jour" is a French term that means "letting in daylight". The term refers to the jewelry technique in which enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing. This allows light to shine through the transparent or translucent enamel, forming a beautiful stained glass appearance.
This incredible and colorful Edwardian (ca1910s) era butterfly brooch is a wonderful example of the Plique à Jour craft! Crafted in 18k yellow gold and sterling silver, this butterfly-shaped brooch is adorned with green, teal, and grayish-blue Plique à Jour enameling. The thorax and wings of the bug feature 7 sapphire cabochons, which are all held within bezel-settings. The sapphires have an approximate total carat weight of 1.45ctw, and display a lovely deep blue hue. The eyes of the insect are represented by 2 pinkish-red ruby cabochons, which are held within bezel-settings and have an approximate total carat weight of .40ctw. The abdomen, thorax, head, and antenna of the butterfly are encrusted with 1.25ctw of rose cut diamonds, which are wonderfully faceted and catch the light beautifully with every turn! The backside of the brooch features a simple pin clasp, which is stamped "750". A one-of-a-kind piece, this brooch would be perfect for any special event or occasion!
Measurements: The brooch has a height of 1 5/8" and a width of 2 1/16".
Condition: The overall condition of the brooch is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold and sterling silver setting, or to the plique-à-jour enameling. All of the stones are secure and intact, and the pin clasp is secure and in working order.
