The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax.
An incredible emerald intaglio ring by jeweler, Frank Walter Lawrence, from the Art Nouveau (ca1910s) era! This bold ring is crafted in vibrant 18k yellow gold, and features an emerald intaglio. The bezel-set intaglio depicts the Roman goddess of the hunt, Diana. The goddess is adorned in flowing garments and is accompanied by her bow. The beautiful goddess's hair is held within an updo, and her side profile is bold and chiseled. The shoulders of the ring are represented by the 3 Roman Graces: Aglaia (Brilliance), Euphrosyne (Joyfulness), and Thalia (Blossoming). The highly-intricate carved Graces are not clothed, but are holding one another in a loving embrace. The remainder of the band is smooth and simple. The inside of the shank is stamped with an "18K" purity mark and Frank Walter Lawrence's signature. A fantastic, one-of-a-kind piece, this intaglio ring would make a unique addition to any antique jewelry collection!
Measurements: The ring is a size 7.5, but could be resized. The band has a width of 5.75mm.
Condition: The overall condition of the ring is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold mounting, and the intaglio is secure and intact.
