The naja is a Navajo ornament, derived from the word "nazhai" meaning "crescent." A common Native American motif, it is generally crafted in silver, often featuring turquoise stones within the design. Although it was originally worn alone or with silver beads, it eventually became incorporated in the iconic squash blossom design, a popular Navajo motif. While the naja is still used in modern Native American and Southwestern jewelry in the modern day, the vintage pieces are especially desirable among collectors!

This vintage Navajo necklace from the 1940s is a wonderful example of the traditional naja design! An incredible statement piece, the necklace is handcrafted in sterling silver, and is quite substantial both in size and appearance. An elaborate naja pendant dangles from the center, forming the shape of an inverted crescent.  Along the handmade bead chain hangs turquoise squash blosoms. The turquoise stones vary slightly in size and shape, and all display a wonderful color ranging from bright blue to deep turquoise, natural mineral spider webbing can be found throughout each eye-catching stone. A simple hook closure fastens the piece securely in the back. When worn, the necklace hangs long and drapes prominently below the collar bone. A very striking artisan piece, it would appeal to any turquoise lover, or collector of Native American Navajo jewelry!

Measurements: The beaded necklace measures 24" long, including the hook clasp. The large naja pendant at the center measures 3 3/4" tall, 3" wide, and is 1/2" at the thickest point.

Condition: The necklace is in very good vintage condition. There is some light surface wear to the sterling setting and some of the beads, which is normal for a pre-owned piece and is not noticeable when worn. The naja pendant is permanently attached, and all three turquoise stones are securely set. All of the silver beads are intact, and the hook clasp fastens securely in the back.  There is a natural patina on the surface of the silver, which is normal and adds to the unique beauty and appearance of the piece.
