The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving below the surface to produce an image in relief with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax.
A beautiful pair of intaglio earrings from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! Crafted in 14k yellow gold, each earring begins with a knot-motif surmount, which is comprised of intertwining threads. The earrings then feature a long, thin pillar of twisting rope, which leads to a prong-set citrine. Each oval-cut citrine displays a vivid orange hue, and the bottom of each stone features an intaglio. Each intaglio depicts the side profile of a woman, who is depicted with a loose updo and headpiece! The setting which surrounds each citrine also features delicate engravings, and foliage-motifs. The earrings are completed by simple posts and friction backs. A unique pair, these earrings would be perfect for any antique jewelry lover!
Measurements: The earrings measure approximately 1" long. The citrine stones have a width of 3/8" and a height of 5/8".
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the gold setting, and both citrine stones are secure and intact. The posts are secure and in working order.
