Pietra Dura is an art-historical term for the technique of using small, exquisitely cut and fitted, highly-polished colored stones to create what amounts to a painting in stone. The stonework is assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section is practically invisible.
This gorgeous pendant from the Victorian (ca1880s) era is a wonderful example of the Pietra Dura art form! Crafted in 14k yellow gold, this oval-shaped piece is centered by a stunning floral design. The design depicts beautiful budding flowers and leaves, which have been meticulously hand cut and set. Vibrant and earthy tones of olive and forest green, along with soft pink and turquoise blue allow the inlaid floral design to stand out dramatically against the rich black background. The overall result is truly remarkable, resembling a fine painting. The Pietra Dura image is held within a bezel-setting, and is surrounded on both the left and right by two curved panels. The panels are adorned with circular-motifs and small three-dimensional gold balls. The bottom of the pendant features two curling wires, which attach to a large gold ball, which hangs freely and adds wonderful movement to the piece. The top of the pendant features two additional curling wires, which attach to the large bail. The bail is decorated with circular-motifs and three-dimensional gold balls, and allows the pendant to easily attach to any gold chain! A unique and highly desirable pendant, this piece would make a great addition to any antique jewelry collection!
Measurements: The pendant hangs approximately 2 1/2" long (including the bail at the top), measures about 1 3/8" wide, and is a little more than 1/4" thick.
Condition: The overall condition of the pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting or inlaid stones that form the Pietra Dura design. The bail is secure and in working order.
