Cut steel jewelry originated in England in the 17th century and subsequently spread throughout Europe, eventually becoming a popular style of jewelry worn by members of high society during the Victorian era. Made of faceted steel studs, the pieces were cut by hand and then assembled and riveted onto a metal back. The faceted steel elements give this type of jewelry a subtle, metallic glitter that resembles cut gemstones. Motifs varied from the simple to the sublime, with multiple layers and densely packed studs. The time-consuming process and the artistry required to create cut steel jewelry made it very valuable and highly sought-after during the Victorian age, particularly to wear during the stage of "secondary mourning." Produced up until the turn of the 19th century, antique cut steel jewelry is now highly collectible.

These gorgeous earrings are an elegant example of cut steel jewelry from the Victorian (ca1880) era! The earrings hang from 14kt yellow gold wires and have an elegant hanging design. An onyx cabochon is displayed at the center, encircled by a border of sparkling cut steel studs. Three strands of onyx and cut steel links dangle freely from the base in a festoon fashion, swinging with lovely movement. The reverse side of the earrings reveals the hand wrought workmanship, where each individual cut steel stud has been individually riveted into the metal backing. Despite their dramatic appearance, the earrings are comfortably lightweight when worn, and frame the face beautifully

Measurements: The earrings hang approximately 2 1/4" long (including the wires at the top), measure about 7/8" wide, and 1/4" thick.

Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the metal base or gold earring wires. All of the onyx stones and faceted cut steel studs are intact and securely attached. There is some normal wear to the backings, which results in some color variation to the metal, but it is not noticeable when the earrings are worn.
