A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself, making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The opposite of a cameo, an intaglio is created by carving into the surface of a stone to produce an image in relief, with the purpose of pressing into sealing wax, often used in signet rings and fobs.
A wonderful French fob from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! This beautiful piece is crafted in 18k vibrant yellow gold and is relatively petite in size. The piece begins with a complimentary bail, which would allow the pendant/charm to attach to a favorite gold chain or bracelet. The piece features a swirling-design, which incorporates swirling "arms" and a central "bow" motif. The circular base of the piece features a ribbed-design, and the underside is marked with a "D" monogram. A lovely example of Victorian-era craftsmanship, this pendant/charm would make a great addition to any antique jewelry collection!
Measurements: The fob stands slightly less than 7/8" tall, including the bail. The base of the fob measures 1/2" long and 3/8" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The bail is secure and in working order.
