A beautiful onyx, diamond, and pearl locket pendant from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! Crafted in vibrant 15k yellow gold, the front of this oval-shaped locket features dark black enameling. The black hue of the enamel wonderfully contrasts the yellow gold setting, and the front of the piece features a starburst-motif. The center of the starburst is represented by a .50ct cushion cut diamond, which is held within a four-prong setting. The diamond displays I color and SI1 clarity. The diamond is bordered by 8 cultured pearls, which are all held within bead-settings and display an incredible milky-white luster. The backside of the locket features the words "IN MEMORIAM" and two intertwining letters which appear to be an "R" and a "G". The locket opens and closes with a discreet compartment at the side of the piece, and the inside of the locket features an original handprinted portrait and a lock of grayish-blonde hair. However, these items could be removed if the wearer wished to incorporate their own personal items into the locket. The top of the piece features a bail, which is also decorated with black enameling. A fantastic piece, this mourning locket would make a great addition to any Victorian-era jewelry collection!
Measurements:The locket pendant hangs approximately 2 1/4" long (including the bail at the top). The locket has a width of 1 1/2". The piece has a weight of 28.4dwt.
Condition:The overall condition of the locket is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the gold setting. The inlaid onyx, diamonds, and pearls are all secure and intact. The bail is in working order, and the mechanism which allows the locket to open and close is in working order. The glass frame, portrait, and hair within the inner compartments of the locket are all secure and intact.
