Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal.
A very fashionable niello French bracelet from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! Crafted in 9k rose gold and 800 silver, this bracelet begins as 2 overlapping bangles, which taper into one piece at the back. The entire surface of the piece is adorned with a unique, scale-like texture. The front half of the bangle is further adorned with raised, rose gold-toned star-motifs, which wonderfully contrasts the sterling silver surface of the piece. The bangle secures with a push clasp, and features a safety chain for added security. The tongue of the push clasp is marked with an "800" purity mark and "80". A gorgeous example of the niello craft, this piece would blend seamlessly into any antique jewelry collection!
Measurements: The inside of the bracelet (where a wrist would rest) measures 2 3/8" wide and 2" tall.
Condition: The overall condition of the bracelet is great. There is no apparent damage to the gold and sterling silver setting, and the push clasp is secure and in working order. The safety chain is intact.
