Victorian Gold-Fill Faience & Turquoise Scarab-Motif Pendant Necklace

During the 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and introduced what is referred to as "archaeological revival jewelry," or "Egyptian revival jewelry." The initial Egyptian Revival period flourished from the 1820s and was inspired by ancient Egyptian imagery, such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics. Some pieces were crafted using a material known as Egyptian "faience", which is the oldest form of non-clay glazed ceramic, and is often found in a range of blue and green colors. 

An absolutely striking pendant necklace from the Victorian (ca1880s) era! Crafted in gold-fill, this piece begins with an ornate chain comprised of interlocking, ellipse-shaped links. Half of the links feature texturizing engravings, which add to the bold look of the chain. The chain secures with a spring ring clasp. The chain is interrupted by a large horizontally-set pendant. The center of the pendant features a bezel-set piece of faience, which has been carved to resemble a scarab. The faience stone is surrounded by a twisting rope-motif border. The scarab is complemented on both the left and right by bezel-set turquoise cabochons, which are also encircled by twisting rope-motif borders. The similar bluish-green hues of the faience and turquoise create a wonderful contrast to the gold-fill setting. The remainder of the large pendant's front surface features wave-motif engravings, and the backside of the component is smooth and simple. A one-of-a-kind find, this pendant necklace would make a special addition to any antique jewelry collection!

Measurements: The necklace has a total length of 16". The pendant measures 2 1/2" wide and 1" tall.

Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the gold-fill setting and chain, and the spring ring clasp is secure and in working order. Both the faience stone and turquoise cabochon are intact and securely set.
