Niello is the art of ornamenting metal surfaces that is thought to have originated with the Egyptians and spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. It is enamel-like substance made alloys of sulfur, copper, silver and lead and used as an inlay on engraved metal.
This fantastic piece is an excellent example of the niello art form! This piece is a wonderful locket from the Victorian (ca1880s) era. This fabulous piece is crafted in sterling silver and is square-shaped. A beautiful checkerboard niello pattern is inlaid into the front and back of the locket. The side of the piece features an ellipse-shaped latch, which allows the locket to open and close securely. The interior of the piece features two oval-shaped compartments, which would allow the wearer to insert a favorite photograph or memento. The top of the piece features a complimentary bail, which would allow the wearer to attach the locket to a sterling chain. The inside of the locket is stamped "SW" and the bail is stamped with three "A" hallmarks. A fabulous piece, this locket would make a striking addition to any Victorian-era jewelry collection!
Measurements: The locket has a height of 1 /2" (including the bail) and a width of 7/8".
Condition: The overall condition of the locket is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the sterling silver setting. There are a few minor chips in the niello-detailing. The locket opens and closes securely, and the complimentary bail is intact and in working order.
