Victorian 14kt Banded Agate Match Safe with Seal Lid
This incredible match safe is a very unusual piece from the Victorian (ca1880) era! Set in 14kt yellow gold, the match safe has a unique design made of hand carved banded agate. The agate stone is smoothly polished and displays a wonderful range of rich colors, which include deep brown and tan with bands of white and translucent swirls that create a subtle marbled look. The top of the match safe is hinged and opens to reveal a hollow, open compartment inside, where a stash of matches could be kept safe and dry. On the top of the lid is a banded agate plaque, which has a carved intaglio seal comprised of a set of initials that read "LE" in a fancy antique script. The bottom of the match safe is carved with a grid-like, textured detail which would have been used as the striker. A beautiful work of art, this match safe has exceptional craftsmanship and would make a very special addition to any collection!
Measurements: The match safe measures approximately 2 3/8" tall, is 1" wide and 3/4" at the thickest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the 14kt gold setting or carved banded agate and the lid opens easily and stays securely closed.
