Vintage Sterling Enamel Hidden Devil in Shaker Charm
A wonderful vintage charm from the 1930s-1940s! This amusing and collectable piece is made of sterling silver and portrays a miniature 3-dimensional martini "shaker." The shaker has a hinged lid, which flips open at the side and snaps securely shut. Once opened, the charm reveals a small devil hidden inside that has been enameled with a bright red face. The devil is double-sided (with a face on each side) and rests on a spring hidden underneath, so that it pops quickly into motion when the lid is opened. The side of the charm is marked "STERLING." A silver loop is attached to the lid where a jump ring can be added if desired (as pictured). The unique pairing of a devil with a martini shaker suggests a reference to the Prohibition era (ca1920-1933) in the United States. This period of reform aimed to correct perceived societal flaws and instill a greater sense of social morality by limiting alcohol production, distribution, and consumption. Now a unique retro piece, this creative charm would make a fun addition to any collection and would be right at home on a special charm bracelet!
Measurements: When closed, the shaker charm measures approximately 5/8" tall and approximately 3/8" at its widest point.
Condition: The overall condition of the charm is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the silver shaker or enamel, which remains free of any noticeable chips or scratches. The spring function works properly, and the hinged lid opens easily and closes securely.
