Victorian 14kt Gold & Jet Day & Night Earrings
Jet is a black fossilized wood (other theories believe it to be a form of coal or sap similar to amber) found in may countries including France, Spain, the United States, Turkey, China, Germany, India, Poland and Russia. It is formed when wood would fall into stagnant water and then fossilize, similar to the way that coal was made. There is generally two recognized types: soft and hard jet. It is believed that the soft jet was formed in fresh water and the hard in salt water. When her beloved Albert died, Queen Victoria bought and wore masses of jet. As a result, the jet trade received much publicity and entered a boom period moving far beyond simple mourning.
Stunning and unusual jet "day and night" earrings from the Victorian (ca1880) era! These fabulous earrings are made of 14kt gold and faceted Jet and can be transformed from simple "day" earrings to a more dramatic and long "night" earring. Each earring begins with a single faceted jet 'stone' that is in a simple but ornate bezel setting and rests at the base of European back earring wire, which fastens in the front. A three-dimensional "night" link hangs from the "day" part and has a wonderful leaf design and a single faceted jet ball that hangs from the bottom. The "night" section of the earring can be easily removed from the wires as desired for 2 completely different looks. Very light in weight, these gorgeous earrings would make a great addition to any collection!
Measurements: The "day" part of the earring measures a little less than 1" long and a little more than 1/2" wide. The hanging "night" part of the earring measures 1 1/4" long and is 1/2" at the widest and thickest point. The entire earring hangs approximately 2 1/8" long.
Condition: The overall condition of the earrings is excellent. There is no apparent damage to the gold or jet and the European back wires are secure and in good working condition.
