SPRATLING Vintage Sterling & Amethyst Sunburst Necklace
William Spratling is often referred to the "Father of Contemporary Mexican Silver" which is a title that was well deserved. He was an innovative and talented designer of Mexican silver jewelry and other pieces of artwork made of copper and tin. He dedicated his time and skill to the artistic development and growth of the silver industry in Taxco. Spratling jewelry is extremely collectable and each piece is considered a wonderful work of art.
A gorgeous Vintage William Spratling amethyst sunburst necklace from the 1960’s! This beautiful piece is particularly large in size and made of sterling silver. At the center of this piece is a large, cabochon amethyst stone and shooting out from the center are 10 sterling silver “rays”. Alternating with these rays are 10 smaller amethyst stones. All 11 stones are bezel set within the sterling sun and have striking purple color. The back of the pendant reveals a pin clasp, which can be used to keep the sun securely in place when worn. At the top of the pendant is a sterling ring that attaches the piece to a complimentary sterling chain. The underside of the sun is stamped “SPRATLING”, “MADE IN MEXICO”, and “980” along with the Spratling makers mark. It's a lovely piece and would make a great addition to any Spratling collection!
Measurements: The pendant has an approximate diameter of 3 1/8" wide and a depth of 1/4" at its deepest point. The chain measures about 10” long.
Condition: The overall condition of the pin/pendant is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver and all of the amethyst stones are intact. The clasp is secure and in good working condition.
